The UK-Africa Partnership is a joint venture between anthropologists and demographers in the University of Bristol and the University of Addis Ababa. This initiative aims to facilitate dialogue, research and teaching between academics and students interested in African population issues.

The research focus is the Patterns and Processes of Population Change in 21st Century Africa. Africa is facing an escalating HIV/AID epidemic, rapid urbanisation, and environmental degradation and erratic economic growth. What are the future implications for health and mortality in the region? To what extent is spiralling rural population growth fuelling repeated humanitarian crises? Which development policies are likely to improve conditions, and which exacerbate the problem?

Western researchers have dominated the academic discussion on these topics. However, in order to generate sustainable progress, we propose that there is a need to improve dialogue between students and researchers on both continents

The British Academy logo   Funded by the British Academy, over the next three years the partners will be running courses and workshops in Addis Ababa for students, researchers, policy-makers and users from across Africa. These will introduce participants to new demographic, anthropological methods and statistical analyses as well as providing researchers with the opportunity to present and discuss the implications of recent findings.
